About Me

I am Rhett Crowe, a Yoga Teacher in the therapeutic Viniyoga tradition in Athens, GA. My group and private classes focus on the healing aspects of yoga, adapting this ancient therapeutic practice to work with people on any activity level. If you think you can’t do yoga because you aren’t flexible, have a replaced knee, arthritis, or autoimmune disorders that leave you exhausted, maybe this is the yoga for you.

International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT)

Perhaps their statement says it best: “IAYT supports research and education in Yoga and serves as a professional organization for Yoga teachers and Yoga therapists worldwide. Our mission is to establish Yoga as a recognized and respected therapy.”

What I offer

I teach in the Viniyoga tradition which is known for adapting the many tools of yoga to work with each student. My classes focus not only on physical strength and flexibility, but also adapting breathing, thought, and emotional patterns in order for you to interact with yourself and other people with less stress.

I began practicing Yoga in 2002 and was immediately captivated. I’ve been teaching since 2005. Over the years my yoga practice has afforded me comfort and stability in my body and calmed my emotions. I believe everyone can do yoga, no matter their condition, it just may not look the same! My desire is to pass on these practices so others can find the same contentment as I have in the middle of their busy lives.

The Difference

This is functional yoga. The goal is for you to be able to move safely and comfortably through your life, doing daily things, for as long as possible. There is no need to be able to stand on your head or tie yourself into knots, although it helps to be curious about your body, your mind and your heart.

Yoga For You

Everyone’s body is different so the poses need to be different. I adapt the pose to fit the person rather than try to fit the person into the pose.

Urban Santosha Yoga Variety

Each class is different; pose sequences change to keep your yoga fresh. We also use breathing, meditation and other techniques for a richer experience.

Urban Santosha Yoga Experience

I have been teaching since 2005 and am a Certified Viniyoga Teacher at the 500 hour level, the yoga equivalent of a Master’s degree.

All classes incorporate pose variations as needed and end with relaxation, breathing exercises, and a short meditation.

For a group class you must be able to:
Sit on the floor (except Gentle)
Get up and down from the floor (using a chair for help is totally fine)
Be on hands and knees
Lie on your stomach
These are general guidelines – contact me about any concerns you may have. No mobility limitations for private classes.

Developing a Personal Practice

For those who have limited time, an erratic schedule, or are simply more comfortable at home, in this package I design a short practice just for you. You can usually complete it in 15-20 minutes and can take it with you anywhere. I assess your physical needs then devise a personalized practice that we refine over a few sessions. $150

Asana with Assistance

You will spend half of the class doing asana (poses), chosen with your needs in mind, to warm up and build strength. The last half of the class I assist you in yoga poses to help you gain a deeper stretch. Private only, 1 hour ($60).

Foundations of Viniyoga

A class for those in generally good health. We combine repetition and holding of poses, matched to breathing patterns, to increase strength and stamina. Class winds down with stretches to lengthen and relax tight areas.

Private Classes

Sometimes you want or need a little more direction or to work with a troubling issue, or perhaps you want to pamper a friend with a gift certificate. In a private class we can work on a personal level in a very focused way to fine tune your yoga experience. Either one session or as many as you like. 1 hour ($60) or 1.5 hours ($75).

Morning Practice

The same poses as the Foundations class but reordered to gently wake up your body, building to more challenging poses to encourage strength and flexibility going into your day.

A careful class designed to protect sensitive joints or compromised energy levels, we move at a slower pace with lots of joint warm-ups building up to strengthening poses. With lots of attention to detail and individual needs, this class is great for those with more serious conditions/injuries or arthritis. Chair adaptations available.

Asana with assistance, developing a personal practice, and private classes also available.

I have been going to Rhett’s studio since it opened. Rhett works with our class as a group, but also as individuals. Before our class even begins, she checks in with everyone to find out what areas need work and incorporates poses into the overall class to address those areas. We do not do the same poses over and over, so each class is fresh. The classes are small, thus allowing Rhett to focus on each student. She is very willing to share information not only about the poses themselves, but the actual philosophy and history of yoga. It is the highlight of my week to attend her class!

For the last two years, I’ve been suffering from back pain due to complications from a bulging disc. Rhett’s yoga class has become a key component in my healing process. She takes the time to meet with you one-on-one before your first class to understand your needs and limitations, and her classes are very small, so she’s able to respond to individual student needs on a week-to-week basis. The classes have an intimate feel that put me immediately at ease. I’ve seen definite progress in my recovery when I attend her classes, both short-term and long-term. Thanks Rhett, I don’t know what I’d do without you!

I’ve been doing my [home] practice religiously and I am tremendously improved! I can actually get in & out of jackets & pull a sweater over my head without wincing and I spent most of the weekend doing yardwork tossing weeds over my shoulders & yanking vines out of trees & barely noticed any impairment. … At this rate, I could be good as new in a matter of weeks. You are a miracle worker!
